Crypto pump-and-dump

Also known as: Pump and dump, Rug pull, Shilling, P&D group

A coordinated hype wave (Telegram groups, influencers, countdowns) inflates a worthless coin so that insiders can sell it to the people who arrived last.

Takes a second look

Spot it

  • A coin nobody had heard of last week is suddenly "the next 100×" everywhere at once.
  • There is a countdown, a "pump signal" or a "launch time" that sets a deadline to buy.
  • Influencers hype it without saying what they hold or who paid them.
  • The pitch is about the price going up, not about what the thing does.
  • Criticism in the group gets you banned as "FUD".

How it works

Pump-and-dump is older than the internet: Wall Street penny-stock “boiler rooms” did it by telephone. Crypto just made it faster and cheaper. A group of insiders quietly buys a cheap, thinly traded coin. Then they manufacture excitement: Telegram “signal” groups, paid influencer posts, bot accounts replying “we’re so early” under every tweet, a countdown to the “pump”. The price rises because people are buying. The rising price is the proof that convinces the next wave. At the top, the insiders sell everything into the buying frenzy. The price collapses in minutes, and the chart turns into a cliff.

The “rug pull” is the same thing with a shortcut: the creators of a new token simply withdraw all the money from its trading pool, or wrote the code so that nobody except them can ever sell. Memecoins (tokens with a joke name and no purpose) are the natural habitat, because there is no business to evaluate, only vibes.

Researchers who studied Telegram pump groups (Xu and Livshits, USENIX Security 2019) found pumps organised on a timetable, announced with a countdown, over within minutes, with the organisers’ own positions taken before the signal went out. In 2022 the US Securities and Exchange Commission fined Kim Kardashian 1.26 million dollars for promoting the EthereumMax token on Instagram without disclosing that she had been paid 250,000 dollars to do it. The lesson is not about one celebrity. It is that the promotion is the product.

Example

@moon_signals_vip, 2h NOVA pump in 00:45:00. Target 20×. Everyone buys at the signal, nobody sells before target. We are early. We are a family.

@gergo_onchain, 1h “Nobody sells before target” means somebody will: the people who wrote that message.

Notice the structure: a deadline, a promised number, and a loyalty rule that only binds you. “Family” is there so that selling early feels like betrayal of the very people who are about to betray you.

Why it works on you

  • Everyone else is in. A busy group chat and a rising chart are social proof (the bandwagon effect), and both are the easiest things in the world to fake with bots and bought accounts.
  • The clock is running. Countdowns and “we’re early” are fake scarcity: they replace thinking with hurrying.
  • Greed and fear share a wire. Watching a number go up while you hold nothing is physically uncomfortable (see emotional hijacking). The scheme is built so that the discomfort peaks exactly at the top.

What to do

When someone pitches you: ask three questions. Who is selling to me, if everyone here is buying? What does the coin do that someone would pay for? Does the promoter say what they hold, and if not, why not? See undisclosed paid influencers for the disclosure part. Then look at the chart of the last coin the same group pumped. It is usually still there, flat on the floor.

When you catch yourself: notice the moment you are buying because the price is rising. That is the only reason the scheme offers, and it is the reason the insiders need you to have. Decide your amount before the countdown, not during it, and treat “guaranteed” as a synonym for “goodbye”.

In a comment section: skip “you deserve to lose your money”. Link the pattern, name the signs (countdown, guaranteed return, no disclosure) and let people check their own group chat against the list.

Don’t confuse it with

  • Volatile but real projects also swing wildly. The difference is a coordinated schedule and a promoter who profits from your entry.
  • Honest enthusiasm discloses its holdings and survives a critical question without a ban.

Reply kit

Calm, copy-pasteable replies for when you meet this under a post. Link the technique, not the accusation.

  • Careful: 'guaranteed 10×', a countdown and a Telegram group is the textbook pump-and-dump setup. Whoever started the hype is planning to sell to you. How it works: https://manipedia.eu/en/crypto-pump-and-dump

  • Not saying you can't buy it, but ask one thing first: who is selling when everyone in the group is buying? Here's the pattern: https://manipedia.eu/en/crypto-pump-and-dump

  • Promoting a coin without saying you hold it is the oldest trick in the book, and the SEC fines celebrities for it. Context: https://manipedia.eu/en/crypto-pump-and-dump

We know not every reply sounds natural as a comment, so feel free to put it in your own words. They are here to help, above all older friends and relatives, who often know these tricks less well and so are frequent targets. Reaching them is one of this site’s most important goals.
