Why am I seeing this everywhere?
Chapter III
How lies spread
The machinery (bots, trolls, algorithms) that makes a lie look popular.
- Bots Automated accounts that like, repost and reply on a schedule to make a message look more popular than it is. Less all-powerful than the myth, but real.
- Troll farms Offices full of paid people posting under fake names at scale, not to win arguments but to inflame both sides, drown out real voices and make everyone trust less.
- Astroturfing A campaign built to look like spontaneous public opinion (concerned citizens, mass letters, grassroots groups) while a company, party or state quietly pays for it.
- Sockpuppets One person running several fake accounts that agree with each other, applaud each other and gang up on critics, a crowd that is really a single pair of hands.
- Coordinated inauthentic behavior The platforms' term for networks of fake accounts and pages working together while hiding who they really are. The violation is the lie about identity, not the opinion.
- Undisclosed paid influencers Creators paid to push a political or commercial message without telling you. It is a sponsored ad wearing the face of a friend who "just happens to think this".
- Hashtag hijacking Flooding a trending or campaign hashtag with hostile, mocking or unrelated posts, to drown out the original message, or to ride its reach for free.
- Brigading An organised group descends on one post, person or community to mass-report, downvote, harass or flood it, coordinated in a chat group but made to look spontaneous.
- Rage bait & engagement bait Content built to make you angry enough to comment, share or quote it, because every furious reply is a free boost for whoever posted it.
- Algorithms that reward outrage Engagement-ranked feeds show you more of whatever gets reactions, and nothing gets reactions like anger, so the angriest posts win by design, not by conspiracy.
- Echo chambers Spaces where you only ever hear agreement, so fringe claims start to feel like common knowledge, and anyone outside sounds either stupid or paid.
- Firehose of falsehood A propaganda model built on volume (many channels, many versions, nonstop and contradictory) that aims not to convince you of one story but to exhaust you out of looking for the true one.
